We encourage organizations which operate institutional repositories to assign DOIs to their original non-duplicative works. There are a few simple guidelines when the repository is a DSpace based system (http://www.dspace.org). DSpace and the DOI both utilize the Handle system for identifiers. When a DSpace repository is configured it must be registered with CNRI (http://www.cnri.reston.va.us/) who provides the repository operator with a Handle prefix (typically a sequence of numbers). This is not a DOI prefix (also a sequence of numbers which begin with “10.”).
Repositories assigning DOIs should construct DOIs with the DSpace suffix as the DOI suffix. For example, a publisher with a DOI prefix of 10.1575 would construct a DSpace DOI like this:
where 10.1575 is the DOI prefix, 1912 is the DSpace prefix, and 1099 is the DSpace suffix.
The URL registered for the DOI should be the Handle URL, which uses the form http://0-hdl.handle.net.wam.leeds.ac.uk/DSpace-prefix/DSpace-suffix
So in the above example the URL registered for the DOI is:
and the DOI link is:
